Culture of Jaipur


The culture of Jaipur, Rajasthan is one of the biggest contributors of tourism in the city. The culture of Jaipur is rich, vibrant and colorful and the traditional influence can still be felt strongly in the men and women and the buildings of the city. Even though Jaipur is being recognized as a metropolitan, the city still has a rich traditions and cultural values. Some of the factors that influence the Jaipur culture are is cuisines, people, language, religion, music and dance, festivals, and of course age old traditions which are still a part of the life of the people here. Jaipur is known for its historical splendors. Every year tourists come to this city in large numbers to explore its beautiful palaces, monuments and temples.

Jaipur is the major commercial hub of the state of Rajasthan and also its capital. One of the most interesting things you will notice about the culture of Jaipur is the folk men and women of the city. It is not uncommon in the city to find men and women clad in their traditional attires. The men are usually with large moustaches and wear their traditional turbans.

Typically, the women wearing traditional outfits can be spotted in ghagra choli. Silver ornaments are worn by both men and women. Enamel jewelry is also in common use. Multicolored Bandhej fabric is very popular in Jaipur.

Much of Jaipur's cuisines have a strong influence from the royal kitchens of Rajasthan. One of the common features of the foods here are that they are traditionally cooked using a generous amount of ghee and butter. Some of the most famous dishes of Jaipur are Dal-Bati Churma, Mawa Kachori, Dahi Vada, Besan Ka Gatta, Pyaaz Ki Kachauri, Ker Sangri, and Chakke Ki Sabji. People here are vegetarians and the curds and sweets form an important part of Jaipur dining.

Rajasthani is the main language of Jaipur. However, Marwari is the commonly spoken language. Music and dance form an important aspect of culture of Jaipur. The folk dance of Jaipur is "Ghoomar" and music instruments like Naad, Morchang, Tanpura, and Sarangi are used here. Art and craft are also a part of Jaipur culture. Handicrafts, clothes and jewelry are very popular here.

Festivals form an important part of the culture of Jaipur. Festivals like Holi, Elephant festival, Gangaur and Teej are celebrated with great pomp and splendor. There is a huge inflow of the tourists to this city during this part of the year. There are also a number of fairs that are held in the city. Entertainment in the form of puppet shows is very popular. This is a part of the tradition of Jaipur. Right from the art and craft, music and dance, colorful costumes and native people, everything about this place is extremely beautiful and all these have contributed in a wonderful way to the culture of Jaipur.
