History of Jaipur dates back to the 12th century. The total area was 15,579 square miles in 1900 A.D and the maharajas of Jaipur were from the Kachwaha clan of Rajputs, and are believed to be the descendants of the mythological ruler, Rama, of Ayodhya.
The Pink City of Jaipur is believed to be founded by Duhaladeva, whose name is remembered in the history of Jaipur. He was popularly known as Tejkaranj and made the city in 1097 or the eleventh century. Duhaladeva hailed from Gwalior. He, along with his brother Kachwaha kinsmen were assumed to be absorbed or forced to move away by the Bargujar Rajput Chiefs and the Meenas. Later, the Meenas became suitable ally of the Kachwahas. Their main capital in the Dhundhar area was Jamwa Ramgarh, Dausa, Amber and at last Jaipur.
1727 is a year which is a landmark in the history of Jaipur. The strategic construction of Jaipur started in 1727 and it took 4 years to complete the beautiful palaces, squares and roads. The entire construction of the Pink City of Jaipur was based on the Shilpa Shastra.
The entire city was fragmented into nine blocks. Among them two state the palaces and buildings and the remaining ones contain the public places. To provide safety and security to those living here, huge walls were erected along with seven strong impregnable gates. This construction was made under the patronage of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh and the proper guidance of the Bengali Guru, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.
As far as the architectural design is concerned, Jaipur was ahead of the contemporary art and architecture followed in other parts of Indian subcontinent. In the year 1853, when the Prince of Wales paid a visit to Jaipur, the entire city painted in pink color to give a grand and unique welcome to him.
